Growing PowerGrowing Power

Growing Power

•Growing Power, Inc. is a non-profit organization and land trust supporting people from diverse backgrounds and the environment in which they live by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food

Lakefront Brewery donates approximately 15,000 lbs./week of spent grain that is converted into Growing Power supersoil

Two tons of worms, microbes in a cornmeal hash, 500 million-year-old green sand culled from an algae pond and the first of its kind biodigester convert the waste into the nutrient rich soil that provides growing power for the inner city farm.

Growing Power provides healthy, nutrient rich organic produce to inner-city markets and world-class restaurants

throughout the Midwest.

Lakefront Brewery was the first certified organic brewery in the United States (1996)

•Lakefront Brewery is one of the few breweries in the world to brew beer using 100% organic hops.

Lakefront Brewery is working with organic farmers to revive the once thriving Wisconsin hop industry.

•Larger breweries have used a loophole in the government's certification standards for organic beer, to claim their beer as 100% organic when in fact it is not.  They use conventionally grown hops that are sometimes treated with pesticides and preservatives

"Organic" means no application of chemicals or preservatives and also refers to non-genetically modified organisms or "frankenfood.

Lakefront Brewery is committed to increasing the availability of sustainable agriculture in the U.S.

Green EnergyGreen Energy

Clean Energy

Currently 5% of Lakefront Brewery's power, which is purchased from WE Energies, is derived from wind power

Wind Power is energy that comes from moving air currents converted into electrical energy. Wind is a clean fuel source

and does not pollute the air. Wind turbines are built on farms or ranches wherever the best wind sites are found

Wind energy relies on the renewable power of the wind, which can't be used up.  The amount of energy that is produced depends

on wind speed, the length of the blades, and the height of the turbine tower. Wind energy is one of the lowest priced renewable energy sources.  The cost is about 4 to 6 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Reclaimed Heat Energy

As hot wort leaves mash-tun, it is rapidly cooled by cold water in a heat exchanger. The heat energy from the wort is transferred

to the cold water and the heated water is used to brew the next batch of beer

Green Facility

Recycling containers are made available for employees & customers. Dumpsters for glass, cardboard, and

plastic are located outside along the brewery.

Flourescent Light Bulbs

95% of existing Lakefront Brewery light bulbs and/or incandescent lightinghave been replaced with compact fluorescents.
